SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties makes water damage at your home or business "Like it never even happened."

Did you know there are different types and categories of water damage? There are actually three types of water damage that can affect your home or business: water/sewer backup, overflow and discharge, and flood. Because SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties is your water damage repair and restoration specialists, we can quickly and effectively restore your residential or commercial property to get it back to “Like it never even happened.”

Water/Sewer Backup

Water/sewer backup is what occurs when water comes up or is pushed up into your home or business through the pipes from a sewer or drainage system. This type of water damage, which is highly unsanitary, can greatly affect your personal property and your health. Potential sources of water/sewer backup are as follows:

  1. Blockage of a city sanitary main
  2. Aging sewer system
  3. Tree roots
  4. City-related pipeline issues

Overflow and Discharge

Overflow and discharge water damage can happen as a result of water escaping or overflowing from appliances, pipes or water outlets in your home or business. Your bathtub or washing machine is a good example of what can cause overflow water damage.

Discharge occurs when water is released from plumbing or appliances, then, in turn, floods your home. An example of this would be if a water heater decides to give out or if a pipe bursts. This can cause a sudden discharge of water.

Seepage is also categorized under overflow and discharge water damage. Unlike overflow and discharge, which results in copious amounts of water in your home, seepage is not all of a sudden. Since that is the case, seepage is typically not covered under insurance claims.

Flood

Contrary to popular belief, there is a difference in flood damage and water damage. According to Google, a flood is defined as a general and temporary condition of partial or complete inundation of two or more acres and two or more properties of normally dry land. Flood damage can only be caused by the following water sources: Overflow of inland or tidal waters. As for water damage, that refers to an array of potential “losses caused by water intruding where it will enable attack of a material or system by destructive processes such as rotting of wood, growth, rusting of steel, de-laminating of materials such as plywood, and many others,” according to Wikipedia. It’s vital to know what your insurance policy covers. Because, in most cases, a flood is typically not covered.
