Reopening Your Business After a Disaster Strikes | SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties

2/15/2024 (Permalink)

business man in office talking to female SERVPRO rep SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties is here for your business every step of the way, from ERPs to disaster recovery.

When a disaster strikes, the damage that is left behind can feel completely overwhelming. Your home, your community and your business can all be affected, leaving you wondering how to even begin recovery.

While getting your life back together at home is crucial, when you are a small business owner or manager, getting work going again is just as essential. With some preparation before a disaster and a team like ours at SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties that is ready to respond immediately afterward, you can get your business running in no time.

Prepare Ahead of Time

The best way to recover when a disaster strikes is to have a plan. When your team knows how to prepare before and respond after a storm, fire or flood, you can seamlessly move through the process and keep your workflow going.

Communication is key when it comes to disaster plans. Make your emergency plans part of your regular training program. Your staff needs to know what every step of the process is.

Walk them through the building to ensure they know where water shut-offs are, how to safely exit the building from different areas and where fire extinguishers are located. Create assignments for staff members in order to secure your building when a storm is predicted.

Once the threat of disaster has moved out, make sure your employees know how to get back to work. If you are able to work remotely, ensure staffers know how to access any secure networks and have the proper equipment.

If an alternate location will be in use while your main space is restored, your crew should know when and where to report to. Keep in mind that some networks may be down long-term after a disaster, so plan to have multiple ways in which to communicate with your team.

Recover Quickly

With a plan, you can rest assured that your business is on the path to recovery before you even understand how much damage has been done. Make sure contacting SERVPRO® is part of your plan, so that the moment the threat is over restoration on your building can begin.

While our professional team begins to rebuild your physical location, let your customers know how you will keep work going for them. Communicate via multiple sources how you will fulfill orders or when a projected reopening date is. Keep your customers updated throughout the process, too. The more communication, the better.

Keep an open mind throughout your recovery. While we will dry out, sanitize or rebuild, be willing to shift how you operate. You may need to scale back for a while or adjust your offerings. Accepting your new normal will help you push forward and get back to the thriving business you have always known.

Plan ahead in order to best respond after a disaster strikes. Practice your emergency response plan regularly so that you can move through it with ease. Communicate well with your team and your customers—you will be back to work in no time after any kind of disaster.

Why Having an Emergency Plan Matters | SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties

Did you know that there has been a significant increase in natural disasters over the last five years? Statistically speaking, natural disasters are not only happening more often, but they have also increased in strength—which means the damage they leave behind is greater than ever.

Statistics aren’t everything, though, right? While that may be true, even if you never experience a natural disaster that leaves your business damaged, there is still the potential for a manmade problem to come along and derail your workflow.

Considering the ways your business might be affected by a disaster can be scary, but it is crucial to stay ahead of your risks. When you have a plan, you can rest a little easier knowing that no matter what comes your way you are prepared.

The Importance of a Plan

With the frequency of natural disasters steadily increasing each year, creating a plan can save lives and even mitigate some of the extreme damage your business might endure. When you take the time to better understand the threats that could happen, you can take action ahead of them to stop potential flooding, wind or fire damage.

Natural or manmade disasters not only create physical damage to your property, but they are also one of the most financially challenging situations any business can face. Creating a plan can not only ensure your team is safe during a storm—it also can mean your finances are protected afterward.

Planning ahead of time also means you can get back to work faster after a disaster strikes. A large majority of businesses that experience damage that forces them to shut down never reopen. When you have a contingency plan, you can start immediately and you can keep your business going even without a physical location to work from.

An Emergency Ready Plan

SERVPRO® has the perfect solution for keeping every business prepared for disasters. Our Emergency Ready Plan can be curated for your exact needs, which means that you have a personalized plan that will start the moment you need it.

When you are ready to start building your plan, our team will assess your business in order to lay out the best possible route of action that will protect you and your team. We can help walk you through what to do before a disaster, during a disaster and afterward.

Ahead of a disaster, your plan can include steps your team should take. This might include packing up important paperwork or ensuring their electronics are ready to work remotely. It could also include how to prepare your building when a storm is headed your way. With a plan, everyone can take action the moment you say “go” because they will know exactly what to do.

Our Emergency Ready Plans will also lay out communication during and after the event. Your team will know the chain of command and who to anticipate directions from. After the disaster strikes, not only will our crew be ready to respond and start the restoration process, but your team will be able to continue working. If your business is unable to operate remotely, we can include alternative work locations so that the moment things are safe, work gets started.

The Emergency Ready Plan is the total package your business needs in order to be ready for anything. With a plan, you can avoid financial losses and prevent a potential business closure. We make your plan what you need—and it comes with our years of experience, backing of a national brand and 247 availability to put everything back together fast.

Make Sure Your Commercial Team Is Prepared for a Weather Emergency | SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

Business man holding an umbrella and briefcase with a dark thunderstorm behind him. If your home or business was damaged in a storm, call SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties to get you back in action.

“Always be prepared” is not just a motto taught to young boys and girls in scouting—it is also a great principle to teach your employees. When you own a business, no matter what it is, you need to have a contingency plan for everything and anything in order to avoid losses. A prepared team is a resilient team that works well together.

As a small business owner, you need your crew to be able to overcome lots of different work-related challenges in order to stay afloat. While you prepare them to handle a multitude of different situations, make sure severe weather safety is also on your list.

Weather emergencies can strike fast and with very little warning—and the last thing you want is a panic-stricken staff. Get your team ready to handle any storm and keep business going.

Know Your Risk

One of the best places to start in preparing your team is by assessing the threats they could face. Getting to know what weather is common in your area and what kind of storms have damaged property near yours can help you create better plans for every situation.

Here in the Cape and our surrounding areas, tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, flooding and high winds can’t be ruled out during any season. While spring brings us the most volatile weather, our mild climate means these threats happen year round.

Cape Girardeau and the surrounding counties see enough severe weather that a multi-layer alert system, including 19 different sirens, has been installed.

The more you can learn about potential weather threats, including everything from tornadoes to flooding risks, the better you can be completely prepared for anything that could leave your building damaged or your staff threatened. Make sure you always have two ways of receiving weather alerts as well in order to respond as quickly as possible.

Make a Plan to Communicate

Communication is key when it comes to handling an emergency well. During a weather emergency, this can be particularly challenging as some systems may go down while the storm passes through.

Make sure every staff member has two reliable sources to receive weather alerts, including a battery operated weather radio. Create a plan to communicate how you will be taking action in order to keep everyone on the same page and moving in the same direction. This might mean creating a code that can be relayed around the office in order to get everyone out appropriately.

Plan Your Evacuation

Along with solid sources of giving and receiving information among your team, the best way to ensure a safety plan works is by practicing it often. Creating and regularly rehearsing an evacuation plan is key in making sure everyone in your building can get out safely and quickly. Make sure routes are well-labeled, and install emergency lighting that will work even if the power is out.

When exiting your building is not safe, make sure your team knows where to go. When you rehearse your emergency plans, visit your safe sheltering location so that everyone knows how to get there. Make sure it is also clearly labeled. Choose a room without windows and on the lowest level.

Not only does a prepared team respond well, they also can respond in a calm manner. Emergencies are scary for everyone, but when you know what to do you can keep stress levels lowered and clearly think through every step of your safety plan. Work with your team so that your emergency plan is like an extension of them, and your commercial team will be ready to handle any storm.

Don’t let extreme weather take control! If storms strike your business, SERVPRO® can help you restore your losses.

The Causes of Commercial Damage | SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties

6/16/2022 (Permalink)

"a large commercial building with extensive damage to roof and siding" The Causes of Commercial Damage | SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties

Our country has roots in the business world, and it’s likely you haven’t been a day without utilizing several companies.

As a business owner, you carry more than a plate full of responsibilities, covering the day-to-day functions and handling the extremes. And when one of those extremes is severe weather, the consequences can be a complete disaster.

Commercial damage from natural disasters has been on a steady rise in the United States. In the last five years, there has been close to $153 billion worth of damage annually, which represents a steep increase over previous periods.

Our weather is typically a mixed bag and can experience some pretty wide swings. This spring kept us under a constant threat of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

In May, there was a two-week period that brought swinging temperatures, torrential rain, hail and wind. Our winters can also bring a variety of weather that can include anything from unseasonably warm temperatures to snow and ice storms.

This varying weather should serve as a reminder to us that we need to always be prepared. The more we learn about the various disasters that our businesses could face, the more we can do to protect them.

Water Damage

Water is one of the top causes of damage to businesses around the country. This can stem from severe weather or something internal like an appliance failure, and either way, it can cause extreme damage to your property.

Exterior flooding, like that from flash floods or river floods, can damage the foundation of your building when water seeps in through doors and the ground. With the Mississippi River so nearby, this is something we have to pay particular attention to.

If your property has the room, use your landscaping strategically to divert water away from your building. Adding flower beds, mulch and even excess dirt can be a great preventive measure.

Even a small drip can lead to water damage in your building, especially when it is allowed to leak for an extended amount of time. Check your plumbing regularly and watch for signs of water on walls and floors. Take a look at your ceilings and ensure there is no warping or discoloration. Staying on top of potential weakened areas now can save you money later.

Storm Damage

Storm damage to commercial buildings is common and can affect an entire community of businesses or only a single unit. Even a power outage, upturned trees and debris can be damaging to your building or keep you away from work.

A strong storm that blows through can tear off roofs or pull off shingles. These storms can bring winds of over 100 mph that can knock over freight trucks and cause irreversible structural damage. We have certainly seen some of these winds when strong storms blew through our own neighborhoods.

There are measures you can take to limit damages from storms, like installing window covers and updating your roof. Simple acts like checking the seals on your windows and doors are also preventive measures.

If you have a lot of area around the exterior of your property, take time to clear any loose limbs and dead plants while you secure any outdoor furniture before a storm moves in.

Know Who to Call

Commercial damage can happen in many different ways, with water damage and storm damage being the top causes. These events can be completely devastating and force owners to close for an extended amount of time or even permanently.

Thankfully, SERVPRO is available 247 to respond quickly to any disaster you may face. Our experts are your neighbors, and it is our goal to build a plan that will get you back in action faster.

If you have experienced damage to your business or want to learn more about our commercial damage restoration services, contact us today. We’re here to act fast, 247.

6/6/2022 (Permalink)

Running a business takes a lot of work. It is so much more than a full-time job, and often so much more than even an overtime job.

You have your staff to take care of, payroll to meet and a social media presence to create—all while trying to figure out the ever-changing landscape that is the business world today. It can be like walking a tightrope!

It only takes one business disruption to knock you off track for good. As a matter of fact, FEMA reports that 40% of small businesses don’t reopen after a natural disaster, and of the ones that do reopen, a quarter close within a year.

With our current business horizon still recovering from the shock of pandemic closures and concerns of what lies ahead, it is more important than ever to have a comprehensive plan that can see your business through anything that comes your way. Close to three quarters of small businesses don’t have any kind of recovery plan in place, and we want to change that.

SERVPRO wants to work with your Missouri business to get you ready and keep you prepared by creating an Emergency Ready Plan. We will work with you to create a plan that fits your company’s specific needs, covering every concern you could potentially have.

We can cover data recovery, backup and natural disasters, so no matter what your business faces you can hit “go” and continue moving forward. We will minimize your downtime and the overall impact to your business by ensuring you and your team know everything from chain of command to alternate vendors, work locations and so much more.

Since Cape Girardeau typically gets above the U.S. average of rain every year with flooding a risk, these plans are essential for our small businesses.

SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties is your local expert in disaster recovery. We are locally owned and operated, and as your neighbors, we want your local business to thrive. Let us keep you on track with our Emergency Ready Plan so you can be a survivor no matter what comes your way.

Building Safety Month

5/9/2022 (Permalink)

Building Safety Month is an international campaign that takes place annually in the month of May to raise awareness about building safety, according to the International Code Council (ICC) website. This increasingly popular campaign reinforces the need for the adoption of modern, regularly updated building codes, and help individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create safe and sustainable structures. This initiative is presented by the International Code Council, a nonprofit association that is focused on building safety worldwide. The Code Council provides a wide range of building safety solutions and develops codes and standards used around the world to construct safe, sustainable, affordable, and resilient structures.

All communities need building codes to protect their citizens from disasters like fires, weather-related events such as flooding, and structural collapse. Model building codes, adopted and enforced by well-trained professional code officials, are society's best way of protecting homes, offices, schools, manufacturing facilities, stores, and entertainment venues.

Building Safety Month 2022

The theme for this year's campaign is Safety for All: Building Codes In Action. Regularly updated codes and a strong system of strict code enforcement ensures that individuals and communities are safe in the buildings where they live, work, and play. This campaign is supported by four core themes that will be highlighted throughout the month:

  • Week 1: Planning for a Safe & Sustainable Tomorrow
  • Week 2: Exploring Careers in Building Safety
  • Week 3: Understanding Disaster Mitigation
  • Week 4: Creating a Safe & Abundant Water Supply

You can help spread the word about Building Safety Month, the importance of building safety, and the role of code officials with your community! Use the hashtag #BuildingSafety365 to join the global conversation on social media, and you can tag us, too!

As always, if your residential or commercial property suffers from structural damage, call your local SERVPRO franchise professionals at 573-339-1948 to help make it "Like it never even happened."

Below is a breakdown of the different classes of fire extinguishers.

Class A: This is the most common extinguisher and can be used to put out fires in ordinary combustibles such as cloth, wood, rubber, paper, and many plastics.

Class B: Used on fires involving flammable liquids, such as grease, gasoline, and oil.

Class C: Designed for fires involving appliances, tools, or other equipment electrically energized or plugged in.

Class D: For use on flammable metals; often specific for the type of metal in question. These are typically found only in factories working with those metals.

Class K: Intended for use on fires that involve vegetable oils, animal oils, or fats in cooking appliances. These extinguishers are generally found in commercial kitchens but are becoming more popular in the residential market for use in home kitchens as well.

Company That Does Document Restoration

8/4/2021 (Permalink)

In business, you know and understand the importance of tangible documents. Perhaps, at the end of each year, you pack all of your important files in a box, then store them in a storage room. But, what would you do if water damage hit your commercial property and affected all of those important documents? You would need a company that does document restoration to help restore them and make the damage “Like it never even happened.” That company is SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties.

As a leader in the restoration industry, SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties knows timely mitigation is the key to reducing the severity and recovering damaged items. Water-damaged paper goods can rapidly deteriorate. Without proper handling, valuable files and irreplaceable documents could be lost forever.

Let SERVPRO's Document Restoration Team help you recover your damaged paper goods before it’s too late. Vacuum freeze-drying is the most efficient and effective way to salvage water-damaged documents. SERVPRO® uses sublimation, turning a solid directly into a vapor, skipping the liquid stage, to avoid causing more damage to the documents. An example of sublimation is dry ice, which is made of carbon dioxide, not water. How does it work? When dry ice is exposed to normal atmospheric conditions, it begins to sublimate; it turns directly from its solid stage into its gaseous stage, bypassing the liquid stage. This process can recover even the most delicate items, from documents to photographs and x-rays, to entire business archives. Our goal is to make this process as simple as possible for our customers!

In the event that water damage strikes your business and damages your documents, you can rely on the company that does document restoration. Allow SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties the opportunity to recover your documents for you. Contact us anytime, 24/7, 365 days of the year. Call 573-339-1948.

Trust the Premier Commercial Company That Understands the Science of Drying

7/6/2021 (Permalink)

When you have water damage at your commercial or residential property, trust the premier commercial company that understands the science of drying. Trust SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties

Did you know there is actually a science behind the process of drying? Having the knowledge of psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water-damaged structure to its preloss condition.

While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, the professionals here at SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties are trained in the science of drying. We follow strict industry-approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages to your property. If your home or business suffers water damage, we’ll thoroughly do the following:

  1. Inspect your building to detect every component that is wet to help prevent secondary damage from happening.
  2. Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether the materials are drying properly.
  3. Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

What exactly does it mean to help "speed up Mother Nature?" A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material?but only if the air is, indeed, drier. The only problem? Nature often takes too long, and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out.

We have the tools to help Mother Nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces inside walls, and much more. SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties’ professionals use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and a proven scientific process to help accelerate the drying of your home or business.

It's not only the equipment but the technology, too! We utilize DryBook™, a proprietary tool that provides real-time documentation and updates on the drying process. It helps ensure industry drying requirements are met. With DryBook™ Mobile, you have the ability to know exactly where your property is in the drying process.

Bottom line? Your local SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties’ franchise has the expertise, equipment and history to help make water damage "Like it never even happened."® So in the event of your next water damage, trust the premier commercial company that understands the science of drying. Our highly trained professionals are “Here to Help” you. We’re just a click or phone call away. Make the call today: 573-339-1948.

Types of Smoke:

Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Fuel Oil Soot (Furnace puff backs)

While “puff backs” can create havoc for homeowners, SERVPRO® franchise professionals can, in most cases, restore the contents and structure quickly.

Local Hoarding Company

8/6/2020 (Permalink)

Hoarding is a serious situation in today’s society. If you know people who have this problem, there is a solution for them. SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties is your local hoarding company. We’ll come to your commercial or residential property to clean up the mess to make it “Like it never even happened.”

According to The Mayo Clinic, “A hoarding disorder is a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them. A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of the items. Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of actual value, occurs.” Many people with a hoarding disorder do not find their habits to be a problem.

Hoarded items are often things others would throw away or look at as junk or garbage, such as old newspapers, junk mail, or packaging. Hoarding can lead to homes filled with extreme clutter to full capacity from years of accumulation, which can make living conditions unsanitary and crowded. Bugs, fleas, rats and other vermin may be present, at which point an exterminator would need to be called. At times, hoarding may spread to outside the home, as well, to storage facilities, or even the garage or yard.

Our professionals encounter hoarding situations in several different ways. Sometimes, we’ll receive a call for a fire or water loss and find the hoarding situation when we arrive on-site. We communicate with the insurance company regarding their contents coverage, and, after approval, contents can be packed out and possibly cleaned, dried, and stored at our local franchise, or relocated to a storage facility so work on the fire or water loss can commence.

Another way our team encounters hoarding jobs is via calls from landlords, caseworkers, real estate agents, or family members, often after the death of a loved one. In these situations, we’ll see if they should look for any items of importance while they clean the job. At times, family members will come and try to help the hoarder sort through their contents as well.

If you encounter a hoarding situation at one of your properties, or with your insureds, and you need a local hoarding company, contact SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties. We’re always available via phone, too. Call 573-339-1948.

Company That Does Board-ups

8/3/2020 (Permalink)

Have you ever wondered if there was a company out there that does board-ups? There is. And that company is SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties. Whether you need a residential or commercial property to be boarded up, our heroes are Here to Help.®

Whether after a fire, storm, or other structural disasters, boarding up damaged property is a burden that no one should ever have to go through— especially if it is your property that has been damaged.

Boarding up damaged property incorrectly could cause secondary damages such as moisture or animal intrusion, which makes the situation even worse. And, as you know, excess moisture can result in mold damage. The process of boarding up after an unexpected damage can also be as dangerous as the damage itself. Our experienced and qualified professionals here at SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties can board up the damaged property. We mitigate and remediate the original damage while providing you with peace of mind.

The next time you’re searching for a company that does board-ups, look no further. SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties has you covered. If you have a property that needs to be boarded up, contact us. Give us a ring: 573-339-1948.

Commercial Deodorization Company

7/17/2020 (Permalink)

When there’s fire damage at your home or business, oftentimes, soot damage sets in and strong odors tend to linger. When that’s the case, SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties is the commercial deodorization company you need to make the odor “Like it never even happened.”

Even a small fire can cause odors for years to come if the affected areas are not properly cleaned and deodorized. Fire, smoke, and soot damage in your home or business can create unpleasant and potentially permanent problems.

As various materials burn, the smoke produced travels throughout the structure, leaving odorous residues and deposits on surfaces and in hard-to-reach places. Unless fast, professional action is taken, these residues and deposits can cause permanent damage to contents and may result in resurfacing odors.

Each hero here at SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties is certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC). Our professionals provide specialized services that can rid your home or business of offensive odors left by fire or smoke damage. Happy customer testimonial:

“Dear Ms. Hastings,

It is without reservation and without request that I am writing this letter concerning the performance of your team with the recent water damage/flood situation that occurred at our facility on Nash Rd. Within 2 hours of my initial call to your office on Saturday morning, January 7, 2017, your General Manager, Brian McCallister, was on-site and was mobilizing a wide array of assets to the site starting immediate restoration services. We discussed the need to be operational on Monday morning and what steps needed to be taken to accomplish that goal.

Brian and his team worked well into the night Saturday night and were back in early Sunday morning continuing the necessary work to meet our established time frame. By Monday morning, the mud and water was cleaned up, the wet carpet removed and the bottom 12 inches of drywall and insulation throughout the whole office area had been removed, and we were able to operate on Monday with very minimal disruptions. Over the course of the next 3 weeks, SERVPRO continued to clean, dry and disinfect every inch of the area and return us to normal operations in record time.

Now it's like this catastrophic event never even happened, and it is very much in due to the actions of you and your team of professionals who came willing, ready and able to do whatever it took to save our business. From the bottom of my heart, I wish to thank you, Brian, and your whole team for such an outstanding effort.” -- Darryl, Verdesian Life Sciences in Scott City, MO

Here are three ways you can “summerize” your business this Summer:

Air Ducts & HVAC Cleaning

Consistent air ducts and HVAC cleaning can save you and your business a lot of money, time, resources and a headache in the long-run. If your HVAC system has been operating for some time without attention, it could be circulating dust, pollen, odors, dirt and debris, and other contaminants. Air ducts and HVAC cleaning is a good opportunity to “summerize” your business this Summer.

Odor Removal

Odor removal is vital, especially in a business setting. It’s been said that pleasant scents attract more customers to your store. If you deploy a scent marketing strategy, you can increase your ROI. Yes, you read that correctly. By simply investing in scent marketing, you can increase your sales. On the other hand, if your commercial space has an odor problem, this can cause quite the opposite effect. Your sales could plummet. SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties specializes in odor removal. As experts in deodorization, our heroes are trained to identify and eliminate offensive odors. These odors can come from a number of sources both inside and outside a structure. Odor removal is another good opportunity to “summerize” your business this Summer.

Carpets & Upholstery Cleaning

Summer is a good time for carpets and upholstery cleaning. When you have clean carpets and upholstery, it creates a more inviting atmosphere for your customers. Luckily for you, if yours are currently dirty, showing stains, SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties is your carpets and upholstery cleaning professionals. Local Commercial Cleaning Company

7/5/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties is your local commercial cleaning company. Call 573-339-1948 for your home and business needs.

When your business or home needs to be restored or cleaned, and you’re searching for the right company to do so, you’re entrusting a company to do a topnotch job, not subpar work. SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties is your local commercial cleaning company and the company you can trust to deliver those exceptional results.

Read these testimonials from some of our happy customers.

SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties provides the following commercial cleaning services:

Air Ducts & HVAC Cleaning

Ventilation systems are often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality. That’s one of many reasons it’s crucial to have air ducts & HVAC cleaning at your home or business. Make it a priority to inspect the ductwork. SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals routinely inspect the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping them clean can extend the life of the equipment. This can, in turn, save you money and give you cleaner air to breathe.

Biohazard Cleanup

Exposure to biological and chemical contaminants can pose serious health consequences. Failure to properly remove such substances can contribute to unhealthy and dangerous environments. SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties specializes in biohazard cleanup. Our heroes are trained to safely remove biohazards and dispose of them properly in accordance with OSHA and health regulations. Equipped with the necessary safety apparatus and cleaning products, we can help transform those unhealthy environments back into clean, safe homes and offices.

Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning

Professional carpet cleaning reaps many health benefits, such as eliminates trapped pollutants, clears out dust mite infestations and helps prevent mold growth. Carpet and upholstery cleaning can extend the life of your carpets and upholstery. Your carpets and furniture are an investment, so you want to protect them. It’s much more cost-effective to have them cleaned versus replaced. This is especially good if your business receives a high amount of foot-traffic.

Ceilings, Floors and Walls Cleaning

Ceiling and wall cleaning should be part of the cleaning maintenance of your home or business. Ceilings, floors and walls cleaning can also help to protect your investment. You should also clean walls before painting so that the primer and paint can adhere properly. Ceilings and walls are exposed to dirt and dust, pet dander, cooking oils and grease, cigarette smoke, and other contaminants. Your heating and air conditioning system can distribute these contaminants throughout your property.

Drapes & Blinds Cleaning

A good rule-of-thumb is to clean drapes approximately every two years. Drapes and blinds cleaning can help brighten the rooms in your home; it can make it livelier. A recent survey by SERVPRO® disclosed that the average customer believes drapes should be cleaned when they look dirty. Depending on your heating system, the number of smokers in the home, and other factors, drapes may not show soil for two to six years. The oily atmospheric soil will gradually cause the fabric to deteriorate. Often, direct sunlight is unjustly blamed for this. You may triple the life of your draperies through professional cleaning, which is relatively inexpensive compared to replacement costs.

Odor Removal & Deodorization

By identifying the cause of the odor, and determining the conditions where it contacts surfaces, the odor can often be removed over time without a trace. Our technicians have access to several odor removal products capable of penetrating surfaces to neutralize an unpleasant odor thoroughly. As experts in odor removal and deodorization, SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties is trained to identify and eliminate offensive odors. We have the training and equipment to identify and eliminate those offensive odors.

Sewage Cleanup

Water from sewer system backups should be considered very dangerous. The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness. There are three major types of contaminated water: clean water, gray water and black water. Special training and equipment are necessary to safely clean this type of contamination. Should your home or business need sewage cleanup services, SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties can make it Like it never even happened.®

Trauma & Crime Scene Cleanup

After the police have finished processing a crime or accident scene, the cleaning and restoration process can begin. And you need a professional trauma and crime scene cleanup company to do the job. That’s where SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties comes into place. Many times, crime and accident scenes have blood and other biohazard contaminants that pose a serious health risk. Our technicians follow OSHA and EPA protocols to help transform an unsafe environment back into a clean, safe home or business. Our first focus is always safety, since crime or accident scenes may involve bloodborne pathogens, harmful chemicals, and other dangers. We will always treat your property and the people involved with the greatest empathy and respect in the face of trying circumstances.

Vandalism & Graffiti Cleanup

Vandalism and graffiti can be very upsetting. It can range from relatively minor pranks to malicious destruction of property. Often simple acts of vandalism, like breaking a window, can cause significant water and mold damage if not addressed in a timely manner. Our heroes here at SERVPRO® of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties act quickly to remove vandalism and graffiti from home and commercial spaces. We are your local vandalism and graffiti cleanup commercial company. In addition to removing spray-painted graffiti from exterior walls, we can also clean driveways, walkways, asphalt, metals, wood, glass, plastic, and masonry.

Is Your Business Presentation-ready?

5/17/2019 (Permalink)

In business, it’s all about presentation. We’re talking about the presentation of your business. Is your business presentation-ready? A professional looking business -- both inside and out -- can attract customers and prospective customers, which can result in sales. If your commercial property is not up to par, SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties can help make your business presentation-ready.

Here are five things to help you determine if your business is presentation-ready:

  1. Moldy signage

Your outdoor signage is a direct representation of your brand. You want to represent it in the best light. Over the course of time, that once-new sign outside of your commercial space can get dirty and turn into moldy signage. On a daily basis, you may ride by it or walk by it and not really notice how dirty it is. But, you know who does? Your customers. The experienced team at SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties are professionals at mold damage and mold remediation. That moldy signage is a “sign” that you need it cleaned.

  1. Dirty carpets

Foot traffic is great. That means customers are coming in and shopping. However, on the flip side of that, foot traffic can result in something else. Dirty carpets. Depending on where carpeting is in your business, your carpets may be the first thing your customers see, which can form an impression; first impressions are everything. Do you want them to form a positive impression of your business or a negative one? Do you want them to see clean carpets of dirty carpets? As a business owner, these are important questions on which to ponder and take action. How your business looks on the inside can be a reflection of your business. The heroes at SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties can help make those dirty carpets look like new, again. In fact, we were voted #1 in Carpet Cleaning (in 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017 & 2018) for the Southeast Missourian People’s Choice Awards.

  1. Filthy upholstery

Upholstery can become highly soiled after a period of time. If you have filthy upholstery at your establishment, and if you’re considering throwing it away because it’s dirty, don’t! The SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties’ professionals do professional upholstery cleaning. Instead of pitching it, we can save you money by cleaning it. We can make those stains on there “Like it never even happened.”

  1. Stained tile and grout

Remember when you moved into that commercial building and that tile was nice and white? Now does that grout look like an off-white, brown, or perhaps black? Maybe it looks something like this before photo. Rest assured, we can get it looking like that after photo. SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties can steam clean that stained tile to restore it back to its original color. Here’s a glimpse of the steam cleaning method here. And if you think your tile is fine, check your grout. Even if you clean and mop your floors on a weekly basis, it’s no match for the dirt and grime that builds up in your grout.

  1. Odor

Unbeknownst to you, your business could have an odor. You may have just become immune to the smell, but what are your customers smelling? When your customers walk through the door, they may be getting a whiff of it. It’s a fact that marketing with scents increases smells. SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties specializes in odor removal and deodorization. As experts in deodorization, our heroes are trained to identify and eliminate offensive odors. These odors can come from a number of sources both inside and outside a structure. Allow us to focus on removing the odor so you can focus on increasing your bottom line.

You may think your business is presentation-ready, but your signage, carpets, upholstery, tile and grout and odor are saying otherwise. SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties can help get your business presentation-ready. Just give us a ring: 573-339-1948.

Tips to Winterize Your Business

2/11/2019 (Permalink)

When you’re a business owner, one of your primary goals is to grow your business. So, your focus is on tips that can help you achieve that goal. However, another great tip you should abide by, especially this time of year, is to prepare your business for inclement weather. And since winter is a prime time for fire damage and water damage to occur at your business, one tip for your business would be to rely on the business that’s #1 in the restoration industry: SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties. Follow the below tips to winterize your business.

One of the wisest decisions you can make as a business owner is to be prepared. Be prepared for troubles that may arise. Be prepared for additional costs that weren’t included in the initial budget. Be prepared to winterize your commercial property to help prevent accidents or losing excessive business.

Tips to Winterize Your Business:

Prepare Roofs & Gutters

Ice and snow can add a lot of extra weight to your roof, so it’s critical you have your roofs carefully examined by a professional to ensure there is no damage and to test the strength and durability of your roof. When it comes to your gutters, you’ll want those carefully inspected, too. As a result of the ice and snow, it can cause your gutters to weaken, which can cause them to detach from your building and allow for water intrusion, which can cause you another costly issue. Lastly, check for clogs. A clogged gutter can result in an ice dam. Ice dams prevent melting snow to drain off your roof.

Protect Pipes

During the cold winter season, allow your faucets to drip at a slow pace. Faucets can be highly prone to freezing. If there are some pipes throughout your business that aren’t being utilized, it’s a good idea to insulate the pipes to prevent freezing. Frozen pipes can be a serious problem and cause major water damage at your business this winter season. But don’t fret. If that does happen, you have the water damage repair and restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties in your corner.

Sprinkle Ice Melt

When there is snow -- especially ice -- on your commercial property, you certainly want to ensure you sprinkle ice melt all over those traffic areas, all the places your customers walk. The last thing you want is for an accident to occur. Ice melt is very cost-effective. Investing in some can save the business an expensive accident. If someone slipped and fell and hurt him or herself, that could cost the business thousands of dollars and a headache. Be wise. Protect your customers. Protect yourself. Protect your employees.

Clear Parking Lot of Snow & Ice

When your business’ parking lot is covered with what winter decided to leave behind, clear parking lot of snow and ice. It’s a wise idea to have this done as soon as possible. You may even factor in your annual budget to hire a professional to clear parking lot of snow and ice. You do not want to lose out on business due to customers not being able to park at your business.

Here’s a good resource to reference for further tips to winterize your business.

Hopefully, these tips to winterize your business will come in handy for you and your business. At SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties, we make it our business to get you back to business. September is National Preparedness Month. How Will You Prepare?

9/3/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties is always prepared if your home or business is hit with a disaster.

Did you know September is National Preparedness Month? How will you prepare if your home or business is hit with a disaster? This month is a constant reminder about the importance of preparedness 24/7, year-round. Disaster can strike at any time, any day, anywhere, and you should be ready to strike back -- with preparedness -- when it does happen.

You never know when Mother Nature will come in with a vengeance or what it will throw your way. You can check the weather all day long on your mobile device, watch it on your television, or tune in to your local radio station. But, a lot of times, you don’t know the extent, the severity of the damage until it’s done. One thing you can do to protect yourself, your family, and your employees is to be prepared at all times. Do you wonder if your business will recover from a disaster? Reference this resource to get more intel.

There are a myriad of disasters you should always be prepared for, including:

Natural Hazards

Natural hazards can be anything from earthquakes to floods to hurricanes to tornadoes to wildfires to H1N1 virus, etc. You hear about these events occurring on a day-to-day basis in various parts of the world. It’s scary to hear and see, especially if these events occur in a city where you have family residing. These type of hazards may be out of your control, but there is one variable you can control: preparation. Invest in yourself and your family by being prepared, at all times, for these natural hazards.

Human-caused Hazards

Human-caused hazards can range from anything such as accidents to acts of violence to acts of terrorism. It’s unfortunate these type of things occur, but it’s the truth of the matter. Although not always preventable, there are minute things you can do to help prevent human-caused hazards, such as being a defensive driver, avoid dangerous surroundings/environments, etc. Again, preparation is key.

Technology-related Hazards

Technology is the way of the future. Technology is a blessing. It helps us in our business, in our homes, in our personal lives, in our professional lives, and more. It has served as a vehicle that has allowed us to connect with people, conduct business all over the world via social networks. It has progressed the world, and it will continue to do so. But, on the other hand, technology can be a curse when a disaster occurs due to failure or malfunction of an operating systems (os), equipment or software. Like with anything else, technology-related hazards can happen at any given moment. Knowing what to do can be the biggest key factor. Being prepared is a good indicator of how much damage -- or how little -- your company or home will experience. How will you be prepared?

Did you know that more than 40% of businesses never reopen after a disaster? Forty percent. That stat is alarming. Don’t be one of those businesses. SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties wants to see your business succeed, thrive and be prepared. And we can help you do just that.

We know all too well the importance of National Preparedness Month, the preparation for your home and/or business in the event of a disaster. In fact, SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties will be the sponsor at the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce’s First Friday Coffee event Friday, Sept. 07, 2018, speaking on this topical matter.

In honor of this national holiday, we will emphasize preparedness, provide you tips and more. Additionally, we’ll be giving away a car safety kit, so you’re prepared should your car breaks down. And, as if that wasn’t enough, we’re having a giveaway contest on social media. Plus, as an added value, we’ll come out to your place of business to set you up with a complimentary Emergency Ready Plan (ERP), so you’re well-equipped for any disaster. Download the ERP mobile app now from your App Store; it’s free.

So, starting in September, tune in to our SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties’ Facebook page to engage in all the fun. Someone’s gotta win. It might as well be you! Good luck!

Mother Nature isn’t always on your side. But you know who is? SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties. We are your fire & water - cleanup & restoration company. With over a century of combined experience, rest-assured, our highly qualified and trained heroes can get your home or business back to “Like it never even happened.”

How to Ensure Safety for Back to School: Your Safety Checklist

8/7/2018 (Permalink)

{School bell rings} Local schools, schools all over will be back in session in just a few short weeks. Parents, by now, are probably in the checklist mode, checking everything off your to-do list for your kiddos. Back to school clothes - check. Backpack - check. Shoes - check. Supplies - check. And teachers are, more than likely, in the same mode. Agenda/curriculum - check. Supplies - check. Books - check. Classroom safety plan - ? As you’re going through your checklist, ensure everything is checked off -- including safety, which is the most important element.

As parents, one of your many jobs is to protect your children. As teachers, one of your many jobs is to educate your students. And, as professional heroes, one of SERVPRO’s many jobs is to educate you on the importance of being prepared should a natural disaster strikes. We want to keep you safe by all means. Safety is key. And we want every student and faculty member safe if you are faced with a disaster. We want to keep your community safe at all times.

When disaster strikes, it can be highly stressful. And disasters happen on a day-to-day basis. In fact, it just happened to one of our happy customers. But, since we were able to come to her rescue, here’s what she had to say, “An experience like this is difficult enough, and the SERVPRO team and their knowledge helped me feel more calm and assured. Big thank you for their help.” This is just a testament of how our heroes serve you every day. Heroes don’t always wear capes. Sometimes, they’re clothed in black shirts with the green, white, and orange SERVPRO logo. Our team helps ease your mind, especially during challenging, stressful times. You can have confidence that our team of heroes will restore your facility back to its original dwelling, back to “Like it never even happened.”

It’s better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to your safety and the safety of others. SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties can ensure your educational facility is safely equipped for the school year. Follow these 3 easy steps to help ensure you have the confidence you need to have a successful and safe school year:

1. Complete a Safety Checklist

Teachers, it’s vital that you go through your classroom to check for any issue that could potentially arise. And principals, it’s key that you check the entire school for any potential safety hazards. Consistent preventative measures are a must in order to protect you, your students, and your faculty. Here’s a quick checklist for you. And just like Santa Claus, make a list and check it twice.

Quick Safety Checklist:

- Check alarms to ensure they are working properly.

- Practice fire drills so everyone is on the same page and prepared in the event of a real drill.

- Have a safety escape route to ensure a safe escape.

- Inspect all exits to ensure there are no hindrances.

- Check your fire extinguishers to ensure they’re working properly.

- Always do a headcount to ensure all students are accounted for.

- Check water pipes for any leaks you may need to address immediately.

- Check for fire hazards to prevent any future fires.

2. Take a Proactive Approach

Taking a proactive approach, being a forward thinker and planning ahead can save you time, energy, money, resources and lives. It’s inevitable fire or water damage will occur. That’s just something you can’t prevent. However, there is something you can do to prevent a lot of damage at your educational facility, home or commercial property. You can be prepared. And SERVPRO can help you with that with our effective Emergency Ready Plan (ERP). What is the ERP? The SERVPRO® Ready Plan is a tool for property managers and owners -- both residential and commercial. It allows for the creation of an Emergency READY Profile. By developing a SERVPRO Emergency READY Profile for your home or business, you minimize business interruption by having an immediate plan of action. Knowing what to do and what to expect in advance is the key to timely mitigation and can help minimize how water and fire damage can affect your home, business or educational facility. By taking a proactive approach, planning ahead and allowing us to implement this safety measure, you can have that boost of safety confidence and peace of mind that everyone is safe should a disaster occur.

3. Contact SERVPRO

Choose SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties to help you ensure your classroom is safely equipped in the event that disaster strikes. We pride ourselves on safety. We’ll get your school, residential and commercial properties back to “Like it never even happened.” Call your professional heroes today: 573-339-1948.

The Power of Networking: How Networking Can Help Grow Your Business

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO knows the importance and value of networking at Cape Chamber's First Friday Coffee.

Networking must be a key component of any successful business. It’s all about developing and nurturing that rapport with your contacts, continuously networking to grow your network. If you’re a business owner, you know the importance of growing your business. In fact, that’s, more than likely, one of your top goals. In order to have longevity, you must implement sound, strategic tactics and strategies to help you achieve your goals and, ultimately, grow your commercial properties, businesses. Here are 3 easy and effective ways to grow your company:

Network, Network, Network

Networking is key and leads to a multitude of opportunities. There is so much power behind networking. You know the saying, “It’s not what you know, but who you know.” And a more prevalent one, “It’s not who you know, but who knows you.” When you build your powerful networking circle, you are building your brand, and you are building advocates who are helping you to build your brand. You are an extension of your brand. So, even when you’re absent, your advocates can be present on your behalf. Make it a point to build meaningful relationships with your connections. Because, at some point, your contacts will send referrals your way (and vice versa), which results in more business for you. That’s the power and beauty of networking. That’s just one facet to aide in your business’ success. Another way is by giving back.

Give Back to Your Local Community

Giving back to your community is an integral piece of the business spectrum. And, by doing so, it can pay large dividends. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be in the monetary form. You are an important piece of the puzzle to your vibrant community. There are two resources you can give that are absolutely invaluable: time and/or money. The need is always out there. It’s just up to you to fulfill that need. If you don’t have money to give, give your time. Time is such a precious commodity. Giving back to your local community is crucial. And it’s crucial in order for us to have a healthy, thriving, sustainable community. Giving back is a key contributor to a successful business, but joining local events and organizations is another key factor.

Join Local Events, Organizations

Joining a local event, organization can be what sets your company apart from the rest, from your competition. There are a number of organizations out there you and your staff can get involved with. From your local Chamber to leadership groups to BNI groups and more. Being out there, being involved, getting your brand out there makes an impact. You pay it forward by just joining. Whatever local event, organization you decide to join, just join, be passionate about it, and delve into it with all hands in.

Taking action on these 3 simple yet effective steps can help you grow your business in more ways than you can imagine. And SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties is always networking, giving back, and joining local events, organizations. We attribute much of that to our company’s success. And we give back to commercial businesses in another capacity, too. After a disaster, we give them back their company by making it “Like it never even happened.” And should your company face a disaster, “give” us a call for all your commercial needs: 573-339-1948. We’re always ready to network and build that rapport with you and your business.

Prepare Your Business for Winter

1/23/2018 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties, we know that your business can't afford to be out of business for even a short period of time. Don't let winter surprise you with mahem! We have compiled a list of tips to help you be proactive:

Tips for Preparing Your Business for Winter Weather

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice and snow, can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Ask SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties about starting an Emergency Ready Profile for your business.

We are faster to any size disaster. When winter strikes, SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties strikes back.

Celebrating 25 Years of Business

10/4/2017 (Permalink)

Join us in celebrating 25 years of business!

The Local Professionals You Can Trust

25 years ago, we opened our doors to business in Cape Girardeau. My, how we have grown.

We may have started out as a carpet cleaning company that grew into a residential water and fire restoration company, but our growth didn’t stop there. As we added on to our list of provided services, including mold remediation and ducts, we ventured into the world of commercial mitigation.

Bigger Adventures

At SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties, we now have the capability to handle any size disaster. So if your commercial building experiences a fire damage or water damage, we can handle it. In 2013, we restored Dempster Hall at Southeast Missouri State University after it caught on fire. We have also cleaned up a 200,000 sq. ft. facility in Scott City that suffered from a water main break in early 2017.

National Preparedness Month: Preparing Your Business for a Disaster

9/1/2017 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties. We are the cleanup team that is "faster to any size disaster."

Did you know that September is National Preparedness Month?

According to FEMA, 40% of businesses never reopen after suffering a disaster. That’s not a friendly statistic.

Disasters vary. Maybe it is a disaster like the tornado that went through Perryville in early 2017. Maybe it is flooding from a storm like what happened to the Cape Girardeau area in May 2017. Maybe it is an ice storm like the Polar Vortex of 2014. Maybe it isn’t weather related. We have helped local businesses recover from various disasters including a water main break in Scott City, a sprinkler malfunction in Piedmont, a busted pipe at a Cape hospital, or tar that caught fire on the roof of a university building.

You can’t predict these types of disasters and their severity. You can, however, prepare for them so that you are ready if they come.

SERVPRO® is a member of the Ready Campaign’s National Preparedness Coalition. Do you know what steps you need to take for your company to recover after a disaster? A good business owner has a plan in place to help keep their business operating, which helps keep their people employed, who then continue to serve the community, who then contribute to the local economy.

Are you prepared?

We have compiled a list of steps and questions to help you prepare your business for a disaster:

  • Be Informed
    • What type of emergencies would affect your business, and what would you do in response?
  • Develop a Business Continuity Plan
    • What is the bare minimum staff, procedures, and equipment needed to keep your company operating? If your suppliers are affected by a disaster, what is your backup plan?
  • Prepare Your Emergency Plan
    • Have you created an evacuation/shelter plan? How will you communicate with employees?
  • Practice the Emergency Plan
    • Have you ever practiced the plan? Is it reviewed yearly?
  • Review Insurance Coverage
    • What type of disasters does your insurance cover?
  • Secure Your Facility and Equipment
    • How do you secure your entrances? Are there falling risks throughout your facility if an earthquake were to occur along the New Madrid Fault?
  • Improve Cybersecurity
    • How regularly do you update your antivirus software? Do you have a firewall? How often do you backup your systems?
  • Promote Family and Individual Preparedness
    • Do you value your employees enough to encourage them and their families to have their own personal emergency kits and plans?

The best time to prepare for a disaster is before it ever strikes. Call SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties at 573-339-1948 to make sure your business is “Ready for whatever happens.”
